Let’s go eSailing

Well, suddenly we’ve all got a lot of time on our hands, so now is a great time to try out the eSail simulator. Beginner or accomplished sailor this simulator has a lot for you.

I’ve recently downloaded the eSail simulator (found that straightforward:-)) and this “road test” is aimed at the student who’s new to sailing.

Having downloaded the program you select at what level you wish to start off.

The instructions are easy to follow and you go at your own pace and repeat as often as you wish – the best way to learn. I particularly liked the clear instructions and advice given as you pick your way through getting started.

You can test yourself on the vocabulary of the boat and operating control lines, halyards, sheets etc. As you get your virtual crew to tend winches etc, but, just as in the real world, to has to be done in the correct order or it doesn’t happen!

Once you’ve got those sails up its time to practice as you master helming your yacht via your keyboard.

I particularly liked how the boat handled, with delay in helm response just like a real yacht. Lots of prompts to help you progress too. Good audible to giving you that onboard feel – even spray coming over the bow as she picks up speed.

Soon you’ll be tacking and gybing like a pro, but more importantly doing it all in the correct order.

The program allows you to progress into racing, boat handling and mooring your yacht as well as anchoring and man overboard tuition as well.

More of that to follow, in the meantime, I recommend to give it a go and to stay in touch with what you’ve already learnt and prepare for what’s next. Enjoy 😊 Mark.
